Update

A fresh can of paint.

I caved in. I bought a WordPress theme, because I just haven’t felt quite as urged to re-learn PHP and write my own theme again.

Granted, the theme I purchased is kind of a special one since it’s one of those engines that allows you to (within reason) build what you want within its framework, and publish that as what you’d like to show off to people. I’ve to learn a bit more about it, so I can get more of what I want out of it, but it’s a bit closer to what I’d like out of an appearance than what I was using.

It’s also special in that the framework in question allows me to build child themes, as far as I’ve gathered, and actually resell these.

For my Patreon patron(s), you deserve more flavor in your update. Here’s the seasoner:

I’ve tabled work on converting Norithics’ Partners series temporarily. There’s a LOT of writing there, and I need to be able to pay proper attention while I work to get the formatting correct. I also need to track down a bug in generation that is causing everything in the test e-book to act as if it were all being shoved into a set of nested tables with pixel-thick borders. Just a few pages in on the last generated test, and I can see eight nested tables. I’m nine issues in on formatting, and I need to know before I finish these whether there’s something dumb that I’m doing, or if it’s a bug in Nimble Writer’s ePub generation.

To that end, I’m working on another short story of my own, so that I can have a separate test bed to see just what is going on. I admit that I’m cheating a little with the story, as it’s another one focused in my Chronoverse, but it’s part of one that I never posted, and nearly lost when the Copy online storage service shut down earlier this year. If I didn’t have redundant copies of damn near everything, this tale would’ve been lost, even to me.

Even that is running a little on the slow side, because I’m struggling to find a place to live, and it’s getting really close to struggle time.

Anyhow, back to the grind.

Silence is Golden, but Damage is Chronometric.

Hey, folks! Xial here.

August has been a very, very interesting month for me. I restarted my Patreon, right as I got so fed up with a part time retail job that I just quit.
Granted, a few days before, I had hit my tolerance point for the place that I was ready to walk out that day. Through some careful wrangling, I managed to line up a bit of temporary work that has consistent, humanizing hours, and a pay rate that gives me a chance to put away a little cash to try to get another place to stay.

A place to stay, you say?

I’ll get more into why I do not want to move with them after the cut.

‘Partners’, coming soon.

About a week ago, I announced on Inkbunny that I was working on converting Norithics’ Partners series, volume 1 to ePub, because I wanted to see a digital copy of the book.

At that time, I was hasty and thought I’d have it done in a couple of days.

There’s a LOT to Volume 1. 23 ‘issues’, at around 5100 words per issue (chapter).

23 * 5100 = 117,300 words, which is around what I think is in there.

There’s a bit of proofreading to be done as I go through each issue, and there’s conversion from not-quite-Markdown to Nimble Writer’s approximation of Markdown. Then I export this, make an ePub, and then get to work on the stylesheet to get it to be presentable. There’s also font embedding, cover generation, and then an actual hardware test to my ebook reader.

This is probably going to be a couple of weeks of work, provided that real life does not properly get in my way.

Either way, stay tuned. 🙂

ePubs are coming. :)

The ePubs I’ve mentioned once before are coming. I’m working the content in Nimble Writer, exporting it to have most of what I want in place, and then cleaning up the ePub to make it ready for your viewing.

I intend to make a free and a paid version of the stories available. They’ll be identical; the paid version is if you’d like to support a writer. 🙂

Cheers, folks!

Ew.

I tried a few of the ePub plugins for WordPress. None of them are what I want. I think I’d be better served creating my own ePubs locally, uploading to the server, and plopping links in for readers. Guess I’ll add that to my to-do list.

A Chronoverse Short

Written by Xial Lunashine in 2015

Preface

This is a short story based upon my Chronoverse, a universe where the star that should be at the middle is a core of condensed Time, so dense that extremely close proximity to said core provides a lethal dose of Time.

Time is the essence that comprises both the forces of Magic and Science in this universe, keeping both arts in a realm of reasonable practice. Teleportation does exist in a universe like this, but both Magic and Science use time dilation to accomplish this feat.

Magic is generally class-locked at birth with an affinity, preventing one person from becoming rudely overpowered.

Science isn’t concept-locked, but is overall weaker to compensate for one person being able to jump from concept to concept.

This story takes place on a large planet located in the Low Sphere.

The Chronoverse is divided into three layers:

  • High Sphere, where magic users reside. The proximity to the Time Core is strongly conducive to magic use.
  • Mid-Sphere, where both magic users and scientific practitioners have settled. While the influence of Time is weaker here, which reduces magic effectiveness, it’s still very strong, allowing for scientific practitioners to be stronger here than they would be in…
  • Low Sphere, where magic users fear to tread, and science prevails. The concentration of Time here is much lower than that of the upper spheres. So much so, that there are regulations against magic users drawing upon their power, lest they cause devastation denoted by pockets devoid of the blessing of Time. These pockets are easily spotted by deadsand, which is a sand that bears the appearance of granulated glass, and the properties of being able to soak up Time around it.
